CO₂-neutral heating solution for modern mining infrastructures

Case studies from Norway and Sweden demonstrate that VEAB’s commitment to sustainability directly supports safer, more efficient operations

VEAB Heat Tech, sustainability is not just a guiding principle; it’s embedded in every solution we design and deliver. With over 50 years of experience and a commitment to innovation, VEAB meets its customers’ needs through tailored climate control systems that support both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

“We offer tailored solutions to meet your needs—whether it’s creating a safe indoor environment, optimising industrial energy use, or fulfilling heating requirements at sea,” says Ola Rolandsson, Technical Sales Coordinator at VEAB. “Just as importantly, we are committed to helping companies achieve their climate goals. We’re proud to say our heaters make carbon neutrality possible.” This strong commitment to clean technology and high performance has fostered long-standing partnerships with industry leaders such as EOL Vent Mining AB.

Delivering cleaner air underground with EOL Vent Mining

EOL Vent Mining AB is a global leader in ventilation solutions for the mining industry, offering everything from high-performance fans to smart, demand-controlled systems. The company’s mission is clear: deliver the right amount of air to the right place, at the right time, using as little energy as possible.

To achieve this, EOL partners only with suppliers that share its commitment to quality and environmental stewardship. VEAB Heat Tech was a natural fit. With its energy-efficient systems and sustainability-first mindset, VEAB is now a trusted supplier of heating and cooling solutions for several of EOL’s mining projects.

CO₂-Neutral Heating for Rana Gruber in Norway

One standout project was the delivery of a complete electric heating solution to Norwegian mining company Rana Gruber. In 2023, VEAB and EOL collaborated to replace the site’s old propane heating system with a CO₂-neutral electric alternative.

The system included two prefabricated electrical substations powering eight 440 kW electric heaters. Designed to heat the intake air for underground operations, the solution marked a significant leap forward in both energy efficiency and emissions reduction. The heaters are automatically controlled and adapt to real-time temperature needs—enhancing both performance and worker safety underground.

“For us, it is important to understand the different requirements that each underground mine faces in terms of ventilation. This project shows what we can achieve when we combine our expertise with the customer's needs and the suppliers' solutions,” says Samuel Anderzén, CEO of EOL Vent Mining.

Supporting Boliden in Sweden with Cleaner Operations and a Smarter Grid

Further showcasing the power of partnership, VEAB and EOL collaborated with Boliden in Sweden to deliver a solution that enhanced both environmental performance and energy system integration.

“At Boliden, we actively work to reduce emissions and create long-term sustainability. Our vision is to be the most climate-friendly metal supplier in the world,” says Dennis Forslund, Development Engineer for Boliden.

Traditionally, mines are heated using gas—an effective but carbon-intensive approach. For Boliden’s Rävliden mine, VEAB developed a custom-designed electric heater that not only meets operational needs underground but also enables participation in the frequency control reserve (FCR) market.

“To support Boliden’s goal of a comfortable working environment underground, while also contributing to frequency-controlled reserves, we developed a custom-designed electric heater. By using electric heaters from VEAB, companies like Boliden can take a major step towards carbon neutrality,” adds Ola Rolandsson.

Compared to a scenario using gas heaters, the system achieved a 95% reduction in CO₂ emissions—equivalent to approximately 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide saved per year.

“With VEAB's heating solution, we can both reduce our climate footprint and use FCR to create a more stable electricity grid. The compensation from the grid owner covers our investments while strengthening operational reliability,” explains Mikael Lycksell, Maintenance Manager, Boliden.

This is more than a heating upgrade—it’s an active contribution to Sweden’s energy transition. With Sympower as an aggregator, VEAB’s heaters participate in demand-side response, supporting grid flexibility and creating new revenue streams without disrupting operations.

Powerful heating that supports the planet

As VEAB’s collaboration with EOL and Boliden demonstrates, sustainable industrial innovation isn’t a distant goal — it’s already in motion. From deep mines in Norway to modernised facilities in Sweden, VEAB’s electric heating systems are helping industries reduce emissions, improve reliability, and adapt to shifting energy landscapes.

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in innovations like ViCi, designed to provide precise, intelligent, and energy-efficient heating for a wide range of applications. These solutions help lower carbon footprint, and offer smart connectivity, real-time monitoring, centralised management while ensuring easy installation and unmatched flexibility. By investing in clean technology today, VEAB is helping to shape the resilient, low-carbon communities of tomorrow. Whether its supporting grid stability of industrial facilities, marine installations, or hospitality and commercial facilities, VEAB Heat Tech continues to prove that powerful performance and planetary care can go hand in hand.
