Electrified change: How VEAB helped Boliden reduce emissions and contribute to a more stable electricity grid

Electric heating in mines – a more sustainable alternative

In the mining industry, it is common to use gas heaters to create a comfortable indoor climate underground. It is a solution that works, but it also entails high CO₂ emissions.

When Boliden was choosing a heating solution for its mine in Rävliden, it opted instead for a specially adapted electric heater from VEAB. The result is a solution that is both energy-efficient and enables participation in the Swedish electricity grid's support services.

To calculate the environmental impact, we compared the electric heating solution with a theoretical scenario where traditional gas heaters had been used.

The result shows a potential 95 per cent reduction in CO₂ emissions

This corresponds to approximately 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year

Energy flexibility – part of the deal

VEAB's solution is more than just a heater. Thanks to the possibility of participating in the FCR market (frequency control reserves), the heaters act as a resource for the electricity grid. When needed, they can temporarily reduce their consumption to stabilise the frequency – without disrupting production.

With Sympower as the aggregator, the connection between Boliden and the electricity grid is made possible. This makes electric heating an active part of the energy transition – while also creating a new source of revenue through demand flexibility.
